The family of the fallen city dweller who died after an attack in a bar over alleged gay accusations is at the Centre of disagreement after some members wanted to block his last funeral rites.
During a family meeting in Makerere, Kikoni, over the weekend, a section of late Lwanga Matthew’s family wanted the last funeral rites arrangements cancelled, saying he ashamed the family.
However, his senior uncle said he was not supporting the idea of blocking the last funeral rites, arguing that it would be an unfair punishment to the dead man. He continued by saying there was no proof that Lwanga was gay, unlike his sibling Sekajugo, who was charged in court.
"I have followed this matter ever since Lwanga was lynched. I haven't heard anyone pinning him for the vice. I only heard he was a sympathizer of the LGBT people, and even this still lacks proof. We as a family should desist from double punishing one of our own," he explained.
Lwanga was beaten to death by a mob on 15th July 2025 after they accused him of associating and sympathizing with the LGBT community.
After a heated exchange, it was agreed that Lwanga's last funeral rites be honored, but it was postponed and to be held together with the funeral rites of other deceased family members, in early January 2027.
Sekajugo, his younger brother, presently lives abroad since he fled the country to escape legal and family castigation for living a gay life and openly promoting it among young men.
Gay activities are not only a curse but a cultural and traditional no-go zone and an offense in the country.
