Police in Kyankwanzi District have arrested a man following the death of his 34-year-old wife, who was found with severe injuries inside their rented home after reported domestic disagreements.
The incident occurred at Kalungu LC1 in Kigando Sub-county on Friday, August 7, 2026.
The deceased has been identified as Nyiramuhirwe Kolodina, 34, who was living with her husband, Nshimimana Emmanuel, and their nine-month-old baby.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had experienced domestic disagreements before Kolodina's death.
“Preliminary information indicates that the couple had been experiencing domestic misunderstandings. We are investigating the circumstances that led to the death and will establish what exactly happened,” Kigozi said.
Husband Reports Wife’s Death to Police
According to police, Nshimimana allegedly locked the room where his wife's body was located and did not immediately alert neighbours or local authorities.
At around 1am on Saturday, August 8, he reportedly took the couple's nine-month-old daughter to a woman identified as Dolotina Uwimana, who lives in the same area.
Police said Nshimimana told Uwimana that his wife had suddenly fallen ill.
He later went to Kigando Sub-county Police Station and reported his wife's death.
Following the report, a homicide team was dispatched to the couple's residence to establish what had happened.
Police Recover Suspected Weapons
Upon accessing the house, officers found Kolodina dead with multiple serious injuries, according to police.
Investigators documented the scene and recorded statements from witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.
During a search for possible exhibits, police said officers recovered a blood-stained knife, panga and hammer from a pit latrine near the scene.
The items were taken into police custody for further examination as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Kolodina's body was examined at the scene using a PF48 form as part of the investigation.
Suspect Remains in Police Custody
Nshimimana was subsequently arrested and remains in police custody as homicide detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Kigozi said investigators will determine the appropriate legal action after completing their inquiries.
“The suspect is in custody, and our homicide team is continuing with inquiries. We shall establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and take the appropriate legal action based on the evidence obtained,” he said.
Police have not yet announced formal charges against the suspect.
The incident has caused concern among residents, particularly because of reports that the couple had been experiencing domestic disagreements before the woman's death.
Police have urged couples and families facing serious domestic conflicts to seek peaceful and lawful intervention from family leaders, local authorities, counsellors or police before disagreements escalate into violence.
Investigations into Kolodina's death remain ongoing.
