Uganda’s rising middle-distance star Shafeck Murungi has reached the men’s 800m final at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships after setting another personal best in Eugene, Oregon.
The 17-year-old Ugandan won his semifinal on Friday evening in 1:46.41, improving his previous personal best of 1:46.64 and booking his place in Sunday’s medal showdown at Hayward Field.
Murungi’s latest run came just days after he announced himself on the global stage by winning his opening-round heat in 1:46.64, which made him the fastest qualifier for the semifinals.
He went even faster when it mattered most, producing a composed performance to win his semifinal and strengthen his credentials as a potential medal contender.
The World U20 Championships are Murungi’s first international competition, yet the teenager has displayed the confidence and tactical discipline of a more experienced athlete.
His preparations included a month of high-altitude training in Kaptagat, Kenya, a region renowned for producing elite distance runners.
That preparation appears to have paid off, with Murungi combining speed, control and a strong finish to progress through two rounds without trouble.
The Tororo-born runner’s rapid rise also adds to Uganda’s growing reputation in middle- and long-distance running.
Having already improved his personal best twice at the championships, Murungi now has one final race standing between him and a potential global junior medal.
The men’s 800m final is scheduled for Sunday at 5:08am East African Time, when Murungi will line up against the world’s leading junior 800m runners.
Whatever the outcome of the final, Murungi has already made a major statement on his international debut. A medal, however, would cap a remarkable first appearance on the global stage.
